Dates To Remember

June 15 Last day to file crop reports
June 30 Last day for new applicants to apply for coverage
October 15 Last day of Hail Insurance coverage
October 31 Last day of Fire Insurance coverage
March 31 Last day for owners to withdraw from Municipal Hail
April 30 Last day to apply for crop exemption

Eligibility

Any owner of land or lessee of Crown owned land (FCC, ACS or any agency of the Crown) in Saskatchewan may apply to insure crops with SMHI. A condition of acceptance is that all lands owned and or leased and the crops seeded on them must be insured. However, if the insured does not wish to insure all of their crops, an Application for Exemption of Crops must be completed. To apply for coverage contact your local RM Administrator.

Cancellation of Insurance

Insurance may be cancelled for the current year ONLY on crops insured which have been destroyed by some cause other than hail. Cancellations will not be accepted on crops that have been damaged by hail. Percent of Cancellation Credit will be determined by the date the cancellation is received.

Insurance on Credit

File a crop report in spring - no premiums paid until fall

Discount for Prompt Payment

Premiums are collected as taxes - statutory discounts apply.

  • If paid by Sept. 30, 5% discount allowed
  • If paid by Oct. 31, 4% discount allowed
  • If paid by Nov. 30, 2% discount allowed
  • If paid by Dec. 31, no penalty charged

Continuous Coverage

After the first year of application, hail insurance is in effect from May 15th to October 15th and fire insurance is in effect from May 15th to October 31st.

Crop Exemption

Crop or crops may be exempted from coverage - applications must be filed on or before April 30th

Rates of Indemnity

$25 - $250 per acre, in $1.00 increments
