Eligibility
Any owner of land or lessee of Crown owned land (FCC, ACS or any agency of the Crown)
in Saskatchewan may apply to insure crops with SMHI. A condition of acceptance is that
all lands owned and or leased and the crops seeded on them must be insured. However, if the insured does
not wish to insure all of their crops, an Application for Exemption of Crops must be completed.
Cancellation of Insurance
Where a crop insured under this Act is destroyed by some cause other than hail, the owner of the land may apply to cancel the insurance on the crop and be entitled to a proportionate rebate of the premium levied. The Cancellation form is available online.

Premiums are collected as taxes - statutory discounts apply.
- If paid by Sept. 30, 5% discount allowed
- If paid by Oct. 31, 4% discount allowed
- If paid by Nov. 30, 2% discount allowed
- If paid by Dec. 31, no penalty charged
Continuous Coverage
After the first year of application, insurance is in effect from May 15th to October 15th for fall rye,
winter wheat, canola, caraway seed, mustard, flax, sunflowers, field peas, lentils, fodder and June 1st to October 15th for all other crops
Extra Coverage at No Cost
- Hail Shatter loss to ALL insured crops cut and lying in swaths
- Loss by naturally-caused fires beyond your control
- Adjustments of 85% or over are paid as 100%
Crop Exemption
Crop or crops may be exempted from coverage - applications must be filed on or before April 30th
Rates of Indemnity
$20.00, $50.00, $75.00, $100.00, $125.00 or $150.00 per acre
Coverage Options
Full coverage, straight deductible coverage of 10 or 25 or disappearing deductible coverage of 10 or 20. Note - Deductibles reduce the premium paid as well as coverage. (see coverage options)
